When NYT national assignment editor Joan Nassiveria called me to see if could report on the press conference scheduled in less than 30 minutes, of course I said, “of course.” Over the next several weeks, I worked with Times writer William Yardley on getting local reaction, covering a second press conference and other follow up stories.
