Spreading the word about SAD

SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder, affects many Idahoans during the winter months when air inversions and overcast skies limit sunshine. Solar Concepts of Idaho has a solution with their Solartubes, which easily bring more natural light into homes during the darker months. Murphy Media Services worked with KTVB Channel 7 on creating a story about SAD, featuring Solar Concepts.

National Dog Show presented by Purina

Murphy Media Services worked with Carson International, Inc., producers of the annual National Dog Show on NBC, presented by Purina, to generate some buzz about the show and provide an opportunity to showcase Carson’s involvement in the very popular program. We created a very focused pitch for our local NBC affiliate, KTVB TV, explaining Idaho’s connection to the show, and suggesting that their viewers might be interested in getting a behind-the-scenes look at who produces it. The news story aired on two newscasts the night prior to the show, on the morning newscast the day of the show, and during the evening newscast following the show.

Patti Murphy receives award in prestigious 79th Annual Writer’s Digest writing competition

Patti Murphy was recently recognized in the 79^th Annual Writer’s Digest international writing competition for her feature article, “Memories of Minidoka.” Murphy’s article was selected to be among the top 50 magazine features submitted from around the world. This year’s competition received more than 13,000 total entries into various writing categories.

“Memories of Minidoka” is a story about Idaho’s World War II Japanese internment camp in Jerome and the thousands of Japanese-Americans who were forced to live there during the war. The article was originally published in Sun Valley Magazine and then reprinted in the Boise Weekly. It previously won First Place for Serious Magazine Feature Writing in the 2009 Idaho Press Club Awards, and the Excellence Award for Feature Writing in the 2010 Capital City Communicators IMPACT competition.

Murphy has written for numerous local, regional and national publications, including the Idaho Statesman, New York Times, Sun Valley Magazine, Boise Weekly, Twin Falls-Times News, Oregon Coast Magazine, Northwest Travel Magazine and others. She also does business writing including websites, brochures, video scripts and more. She is currently working on a book of “momisms,” which are quotes that Idahoans remember their mothers saying. The book will be published in 2011 and proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Women’s and Children’s Alliance in honor of its 100^thanniversary.

Agency News: Murphy receives contract to assist Stan Olson, candidate for Idaho Superintendent

Patti Murphy launches new “Momisms” book project

Patti Murphy has teamed up with national best-selling author Elaine Ambrose to publish a new book on “Momisms” – the odd and silly sayings that mothers tell their children – and are seeking submissions from anyone who currently lives in Idaho. The book, tentatively titled “Mother Knows Best: 100 quotes Idahoan’s Remember From Their Mothers,” will be published in time for Mother’s Day, 2011 and proceeds from the sale of the books will be donated to the Women’s and Children’s Alliance (WCA) in honor of its 100^th anniversary. The WCA provides safety, healing and freedom to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault.

Details about submitting momisms can be found at www.mymomisms.com. Submissions may be sent directly from a submission form on that website, or can be emailed to info [at] mymomisms [dot] com. In addition, the authors have launched a My Momisms Facebook page where people may post their favorite quotes.

Momisms are those interesting things that mothers say to their kids as a way to make them behave or teach them a life lesson. Examples might be, ‘If you keep making that face it will freeze that way,’ or ‘Always wear clean underwear in case you get in an accident.’ Momisms can also can be wise and inspirational sayings unique to a particular family. We are encouraging people to send in any saying – funny or serious – that their moms used to tell them as they were growing up.

Once a momism is selected for inclusion, the authors might also request a photo of the featured mother. Submitting a Momism automatically grants the authors and publishers permission to publish the material in the upcoming book, and to use the submission in promotional materials if needed.
